General Romárico Vidal Sotomayor García, accused of commanding the repression of 11J, dies

MÉRIDA, Mexico – Major General Romárico Vidal Sotomayor García, sanctioned by the U.S. for his role in repressing the social unrest of July 11, 2021, died Sunday at the age of 85.

Sotomayor García died in the early hours of the morning, his remains were cremated and will be displayed next Tuesday at the funeral home on Calzada and K, between 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. reported Cubadebate.

In 2021, Sotomayor García served as head of the Political Directorate of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), which included, among other forces, the National Special Brigade of the Ministry of the Interior (SNB) and the National Revolutionary Police (PNR), deployed in the repression of protesters.

For this reason, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the United States Department of the Treasury sanctioned him for its relationship with “actions to repress peaceful, pro-democratic protests in Cuba.”

The note of Cubadebate He points out that Sotomayor García was a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and a member of the National Assembly of People’s Power.

He joined the Rebel Army at the age of 18 and was head of the Southern Troop Group during the Angolan war.

His biographical summary includes various positions within the Cuban military and police apparatus: deputy minister of the MININT, head of the General Directorate of the National Revolutionary Police, of the Political Directorate of the MININT, of various units of the FAR, of the General Staff of the Eastern Army.

He was also awarded the honorary title of Hero of the Republic of Cuba in 2015.
