The company General Mills Brasil Alimentos Ltda. started the voluntary collection of all batches of vanilla flavored ice cream from the Häagen-Dazs brand, valid between 7/7/2022 and 7/18/2023, sold in a 415-gram carton.
The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) reported that the batches in question, imported from France, are being collected globally, due to the presence of the substance 2-chloroethanol in the ingredient used in the manufacture of ice cream to impart vanilla flavor.
“There are no restrictions on the marketing and use of the other flavors of Häagen-Dazs ice cream”, highlighted the health agency.
Through a note, the company confirmed that the presence of traces of 2-chloroethanol was identified in the natural vanilla aroma, which may be associated with ethylene oxide, a substance with carcinogenic (can cause cancer) and mutagenic (which can cause changes capable of causing damage to human cells).
“By the scientific information available, it is not possible to rule out the genotoxicity of 2-CE, a substance resulting from the degradation of ETO and which was detected in these specific batches of ice cream”, reinforced Anvisa.
Consumer
The agency’s guidance to consumers who have purchased vanilla ice cream with the expiration dates mentioned is not to consume the product.
“Keep the packaging and contact General Mills on 0800 031 0707 or email [email protected] for clarification, exchange or refund.”
General Mills stressed that all other flavors and presentations of Häagen-Dazs products were not affected by the recall and can be consumed normally.
