General Lacret, the Cuban patriot who gives his name to a popular street in Havana

Havana Cuba. — This December 24 marks the 118th anniversary of the death in Havana of Jose Lacret Morlotprominent Cuban patriot and Mambí general descendant of a French family who participated in two of the wars of independence that took place in Cuba.

Lacret was Antonio Maceo’s field assistant and starred with him in the mythical Baraguá Protest, one of the most remembered passages of the libertarian feat against the Spanish metropolis.

Lacret participated in the Ten Years’ War (1868-1878) and in the so-called Necessary War (1895-1898). In both contests he received promotions as a reward for his bravery and courage on the battlefield.

He finished the great war as a captain, a rank that was given to him on February 18, 1874.

On July 15, 1895, already during the Necessary War, he was promoted to colonel. Six months later, on December 18, 1895, he received the rank of Brigadier General, and almost four months later, on March 10, 1896, that of Major General.

After the Necessary War was over, Lacret presided over the Executive Commission of the ARRC until its dissolution on June 30, 1899. He was one of the nine Cuban generals who attended, invited by the American General John R. Brooks, the act of exchange of powers , on January 1, 1899.

founded the newspaper The Cuban Navyfrom which he fought for the development of the merchant marine in Cuba, until the end of 1902.

Lacret was also elected representative to the Constituent Assembly of 1901, where he vigorously opposed the Platt Amendment.

The outstanding patriot died in the Cuban capital on December 24, 1904. His remains rest in the Colón Necropolis.

An important avenue that connects the municipalities of Diez de Octubre and Cerro, two of the most populated in Havana, was named in his honor.
