Every November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. In Ecuador, 6 out of 10 women suffer some type of violence.
In times of crisis the figures of gender violence increases; this was seen during the Covid-19 pandemic. A new report from UN Women, based on data from 13 countries since the pandemic, shows that 2 out of 3 women suffered some form of violence or did they know any woman that suffered. Unfortunately, only one in 10 said I would go to the police looking for help.
In Ecuador, the figure has not been stopped and six out of 10 women suffer some type of violence. And, until 2019, a femicide was registered every 72 hours. Currently registered one femicide every 44 hours. The highest figure in the history of the country.

172 deaths
The Alliance for the Monitoring and Mapping of Femicides in Ecuador (Fundación Aldea) presented the data on deaths from gender violence from January to November 15, 2021. Aldea registers 172 deaths.
Femicide Red Alert
2021 is configured as the most violent year for women and girls since femicide was criminalized (2014) in Ecuador. «We live in the second country with the highest number of total femicides in Latin America and the Caribbean in the context of the pandemic (Source: Mundo Sur). So far in 2021, we have registered a femicide, transfemicide or violent death of women every 44 hours, that is to say, every 1.8 days.
The organizations denounce this escalation of violence against women and girls and declare ourselves in red alert against femicides », the organization points out. (AVV)
