The Ministry of Justice reported the transfer of 42 inmates -40 of foreign nationality and two Chileans- from the Santiago 1 prison to other penitentiary facilities. The subjects were extorting first-time defendants, according to the magistrate Fernando Guzman after a surprise visit to the Preventive Detention Center.
Guzmán -who made the visit after receiving an appeal for protection from an inmate, who denounced beatings inside the prison compound- reported that there are organizations in Santiago 1 that carry out attacks against first-time inmates: they send videos to their relatives and ask for money in exchange not to take their lives, slogan Third.
The Undersecretary of Justice, Jaime Gajardo Falconpointed out that “in less than 24 hours we have transferred highly dangerous defendants, mainly foreigners, who were extorting first-timers.”
“We have referred them to different maximum security modules of other penal units in the country with the aim of dismantling organized crime gangs, which endanger the safety of the prison population and staff, as well as society,” the police added. authority.
Gajardo added that the transfers of persons deprived of liberty from Santiago 1 are also due to the overcrowding that exists in that prison; allowing to improve the habitability conditions of the place.
The National Director of the Gendarmerie, Sebastian Urra Palmaaffirmed that the transfers were carried out applying all safety and health protocols, and added that an agreement is already being worked on with other countries that will allow us to access the records of part of the prison population from abroad.
“We are already in contact with the countries of origin of these defendants, since they must enter our facilities with another classification and not as first-timers,” said Urra.
The transfer of the inmates is part of the Plan against Organized Crime, promoted by the Ministry of Justice.
