Gaza in ruins: 80 % of the main city of the Palestinian enclave is destroyed

The city of Gaza, in the Palestinian enclave of the same namefaces an unprecedented devastation with about 80 % of its destroyed buildings after almost two years of war, according to recent satellite analysis.

The Israeli army has carried out systematic attacks in the neighborhoods of Gaza, which have left entire communities reduced to debris while thousands of civilians continue to be trapped in the midst of violence and famine.

Adi Ben Nun, director of the Geographic Information System of the Hebrew University, confirmed that neighborhoods such as Shati, Nasser and Shuja’iyya neighborhoods were completely destroyed, while others have important degrees of devastation, According to quotation Latin press (PL).

On the outskirts and in the Jabaliya refugee field, residents denounce the presence of robots loaded with explosives that are being used to demolish the few structures that remain standing, according to other press reports.

Israel’s offensive has included intense bombings and an advanced land military that has caused the forced displacement of about one million Palestinians, under catastrophic humanitarian conditions according to the UN.

At the end of August, a source of the United Nations had confirmed that mass destruction in areas such as Az Zaytoun and Shuja’iyya left uninhabitable environments, without safe shelters for most of the population.

Israel urges doctors, hospitals and NGOs to leave Gaza

Meanwhile, hospitals in Gaza reported that at least 31 people died from Israeli fire on Monday, more than half of them women and children.

At least 13 people died in the city of Gaza, where Israel continues to carry out several large -scale incursions.

The Ministry of Health of the Enclave reports that more than 63 thousand Palestinians have died since the beginning of the conflict in October 2023, almost half of them women and children. This, not counting the tens of thousands of bodies that still remain insepultures between the rubble.

Another 160 thousand Palestinians have been injured, mostly civilians.

A call to reconstruction and peace

At the same time, international authorities and international representatives insist on the urgent need to rebuild the destroyed infrastructure and to reach agreements that allow peaceful coexistence and mutual recognition between Israel and Palestine.

In Rome, the Foreign Minister of the Palestinian National Authority denounced the devastation in the health and educational system, and advocates for a future where the Palestinian people can fully develop their potential.

Varsen Aghabekian spoke of the “urgent need” of rebuilding the health system in Gaza.

“Today universities in Gaza have been razed and our medical faculties reduced to the ground. It will have been reconstructing this system, not only in Gaza, but also in the West Bank,” said Aghabekian after visiting Palestinian children evacuated to Italy to receive treatment, along with his Italian counterpart, Antonio Tajani.

Genocide

For its part, the largest professional organization of academics studying genocide in the world said Tel Aviv is committing that type of criminal conduct in Gaza.

Israel, who was established as a State in 1948 after the Holocaust, in which 6 million European Jews and others were killed by Nazi Germany during World War II (1939-1945), vehemently rejects the accusation.

The International Association of Academics of Genocide, which has around 500 members throughout the planet, including several experts in the Holocaust, joined other important human rights organizations, including two Israeli groups, to apply the term to Israel’s behavior in times of war.

“Israel’s policies and actions in Gaza comply with the legal definition of genocide”, as well as crimes against humanity and war crimes, according to the resolution of the group, which was supported by 86 % of those who voted.

“People who are experts in the study of genocide can see this situation for what it is,” he explained to the agency Associated Press Melanie O’Brien, president of the Organization and Professor of International Law at the University of Western Australia.

The experts did not deny the criminal nature of Hamas’s attack to Israel in October 2023, in which about 1200 people lost their lives and another 251 were taken as hostages. However, they considered that Tel Aviv’s response to this attack has been directed against the entire population of Gaza and also against the indispensable facilities for their survival.
