Gastronomic Fair in Pinheiros celebrates SP’s 472nd anniversary

Gastronomic Fair in Pinheiros celebrates SP’s 472nd anniversary

Amidst the celebrations of the 472nd anniversary of the city of São Paulo, this weekend (24th and 25th), the Sabores dos Bairros gastronomic fair, in Pinheiros, offers several options of dishes and drinks that represent the cultural diversity of the capital of São Paulo.Gastronomic Fair in Pinheiros celebrates SP’s 472nd anniversary

With free entry, the event features samba and reggae musical performances, as well as activities for children. Promoted by the digital platform Cola in Sampa and with support from the Pinheiros sub-prefecture, the fair has its second edition on São Paulo’s anniversary.

In order to highlight São Paulo’s gastronomy, flavors were selected from six traditional neighborhoods of the city: Liberdade, Mooca, Bom Retiro, Brás, Santa Cecília and the downtown region.

The flavors of Liberdade and Bom Retiro are currently marked by the presence of Asian cuisine. Symbols of Japanese culture, such as yakissoba and takoyaki, and Korean culture, such as tteokbokki and corn dog, are part of the daily life of the neighborhood and the event.

Brás has a strong Arab heritage, which is represented at the fair with shawarma, kibbeh and an artisanal cold dessert known as traditional Arab ice cream. Mooca, on the other hand, contains flavors of Italian origin, such as pizza, cannoli and schiacciata.

The regions of Centro and Santa Cecília are represented at the event as a diverse territory, which portrays the past and the contemporary. Flavors from Brazil and Latin America, such as baião de Dois, pork rinds and pupusa from El Salvador, a stuffed bread typical of Central American cuisine, are some of the highlights.

The Co-founder of Cola in Sampa, Willian Vendramini, said that the idea for the event was born when he realized that there were not many gastronomic celebrations on São Paulo’s birthday.

“We saw the need to celebrate São Paulo’s anniversary and show the best that the city has to offer in terms of gastronomy. It has several iconic neighborhoods that bring a very strong gastronomy, such as Bom Retiro, Liberdade, Mooca, etc. So, we brought together all these neighborhoods within a single festival”, said Willian.

Music Programming

The musical program at the gastronomic fair features artists exploring forró, pop-rock, pé-de-serra and samba. A highlight is Samba do Tatu, which performs on Sunday, at 3:30 pm, with samba classics.

The Tatuapé musical group emerged in meetings that took place after rehearsals at the Acadêmicos do Tatuapé samba school, in which some members were part. Around 2017, they decided to formalize the project as “Samba do Tatu”, in honor of the neighborhood and the samba school.

For one of the group’s founders, Alexsandro Domingos de Souza, Samba do Tatu has a contagious energy. “We have a very different way that infects the public because of the group’s energy, inviting people on stage and celebrating birthdays. We make the public clap our hands,” said Alexsandro.

Other musical attractions performing at the event include Forreggae K’NOA, a group that mixes forró and reggae, a Jota Quest cover band and a DJ who will play Brazilian songs.

The Sabores dos Bairros gastronomic fair is located on Avenida Professor Frederico Hermann Júnior, in front of the Pinheiros Subprefecture. The event will be on the 24th and 25th, from 11am to 9pm.
