Since when does the increase apply to the IEPS?
The new quotas come into force on January 1, 2026, in accordance with the Agreement issued by the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP). This is not a new tax, but rather an inflationary update provided for in the law.
The adjustment was calculated with an update factor of 1.0379, derived from the growth of the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) between November 2024 and November 2025.
How much will the IEPS increase for gasoline and diesel in 2026?
These are the IEPS quotas for automotive fuels that will apply starting in January.
IEPS for automotive fuels (per liter)
- Gasoline less than 91 octane (regular): 6.7001 pesos
- Gasoline greater than or equal to 91 octane (premium): 5.6579 pesos
- Diesel: 7.3634 pesos
- Non-fossil fuels: 5.6579 pesos
Environmental IEPS: fossil fuels
In addition to the IEPS for gasoline and diesel, the quotas applicable to fossil fuels are also updated, which function as an environmental tax:
- Gasoline and gasplane: 17.7591 cents per liter
- Diesel: 21.5491 cents per liter
- Jet fuel and kerosene: 21.2108 cents per liter
- Fuel oil: 22.9975 cents per liter
- Mineral coal: 47.1189 pesos per ton
State IEPS for gasoline and diesel
These fees correspond to the IEPS component that is allocated to the federal entities:
- Gasoline less than 91 octane: 59.1390 cents per liter
- Gasoline greater than or equal to 91 octane: 72.1605 cents per liter
- Diesel: 49.0817 cents per liter
Does this adjustment mean that the price of gasoline will rise?
Not necessarily automatically. The final price to the consumer depends on several factors:
- International oil price
- Exchange rate
- Marketing margins
- Tax incentives for the IEPS applied by the government
The Treasury can offset the increase with stimuli, as has happened in previous years, to avoid sudden impacts on the public price.
Why is the IEPS updated every year?
The law establishes that the IEPS must be adjusted annually based on inflation to prevent the tax from losing collecting power. It is an automatic mechanism and different from a tax reform.
