Gascue, the urban heritage of the city

The former director of Heritage Cultural Jose Enrique Delmonte stated that the sector Gascue continues its path to the dissolution of the image that characterized it in the 20th century and advocated for policies that consolidate its identity and preserve your heritage architectural and urban through a redesign that adjusts to reality.

He stated that part of the spirit that gave meaning to the sector is still slightly preserved, such as individual houses with a lot of vegetation, architecture with characteristic historicists and a low density.

“Above that, an overwhelming process of transformation towards a less balanced model and closer to what characterizes the other metropolitan areas of Santo Domingo,” he said.

When answering questions from Free Diarythe architectural professional, said that the trend is to take advantage of the lots for a development speculative real estate that is part of the growth dynamics of the urban territory of the entire National District.

Model development

Consider that the problem is not the investment real estate, but the model of development and maintained that there has been a failure to determine the policies required for an important sector with characteristics of identity recognized urban.

He said that there is always an outstanding debt with the issue of Gascue and that a rapprochement between the parties is required to reach agreements that become standards that everyone complies with.

He maintained that the problem is not the exclusive responsibility of the State through its agency of heritagebut also of the developers of real estate projects and the community itself.

“It is very likely that those at the forefront of public policies in favor of preservation – at any stage – recognize all the potential historicalurban, architectural of that sector. I think they attend to other needs that could be more urgent on their agenda and visualize Gascue as a persistent problem.

Delmonte sees the position of those who value the historical part of Gascue and the developmental vision of investors and clarifies that it is an issue that transcends the national level, but believes that it is part of the lack of knowledge of the value historical of the buildings.

“He heritage architectural design is a piece within the conservation mechanism, which covers topics as broad as the environment and identityor consumerism and the exploitation of natural resources. There are sufficient reasons to promote the preservation of the heritage architectural without considering it as a limitation for the development urban,” he said.

Delmonte raised the need to act with a broad vision of what is Gascue so that it is understood as a sector with characteristics different from the center historical and to the modern city of high towers.
