This was announced by the ‘Fortín’ through a photograph published on social networks, in which the ‘Tiger’ appears dressed in a training shirt and making the symbol of victory with his fingers.

The appointment put an end to weeks of rumors surrounding the return of Gareca after the Uruguayan Alexander Medina left the technical direction of Vélez at the end of February after losing on the fifth day of the Argentine championship against Boca Juniors.

Third stage in Vélez

Gareca played in Vélez between 1989 and 1992, and was in charge of its bench between 2009 and 2013, a period in which he won four titles: two Clausura Tournaments (2009 and 2011), an Initial (2012) and an absolute Championship (2012). -2013).

Vélez Sarsfield is currently seventeenth in the table, with two wins and two draws after six games of the Professional Football League (LFP). With eight points, he is far from the leading duo, made up of Defensa y Justicia and San Lorenzo, both with 13.

His record as a player

As a footballer, the former forward developed his career mainly in Argentina, where he played for arch-rivals Boca Juniors and River Plate, for Sarmiento and for Independiente – a club with which he won the South American Super Cup in 1994 -, as well as Vélez. He also played for the Colombian América de Cali between 1985 and 1989.

His record as a coach

As a coach, he led numerous teams in his country, including Talleres, with which he won the Conmebol Cup in 1999; as well as América de Cali and Independiente Santa Fe in Colombia; the Peruvian Universitario and the Brazilian Palmeiras, this one in 2014.

There he began his successful work with the Peruvian team (2015-2022), a seven-year period in which the Andean team qualified for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, was about to repeat it in Qatar 2022 and came second once and two third in the Copa América.
