Gabriel, José and Nadia: the faces behind the air tragedy in Vaupés

The air tragedy that occurred this Monday, November 10 in the department of Vaupés not only left the loss of a small plane burned, but also the deep pain for the death of three officials of the National Registry of Civil Status who, until their last minutes, worked to guarantee citizen participation in the most remote corners of the country.

It is about Gabriel Gomez Sanchez, José Misael Silva Bernal and Nadia Valentina Valencia Yepeswho were traveling aboard the HK-641 aircraft of the Nativa Air company when it crashed to the ground shortly after taking off from the non-municipalized area of ​​Bocoa.

The mission they carried out was part of the day of registering citizens at the voting stations in rural areas of Vaupés, a task that requires complex travel by air and river due to the difficult geographical conditions of the region.

According to the Registry Office, the three officials belonged to the Departmental Delegation of Vaupés and were recognized for their commitment to the indigenous and rural communities of southeastern Colombia. They had toured several towns for days, guiding the inhabitants on the registration process and guaranteeing that the right to vote reached even the most remote territories of the country.

Gabriel Gomez Sanchezdescribed by his colleagues as a cheerful and disciplined servant, had a long career within the entity. His experience in areas with difficult access made him a benchmark for institutional delivery.

José Misael Silva Bernalfor his part, was a serene and respected man, with a deep sense of responsibility. Those who knew him highlight his commitment to public service and his constant willingness to help.

Nadia Valentina Valencia Yepesthe youngest of the group, represented a new generation of civil servants with a social vocation. Passionate about community work, she used to express that her job was “to make visible those who are not always heard.” His death has generated special shock among his colleagues in the Registry.

Institutional and human pain

The national registrar, Hernan Penagosdeeply regretted the loss of the three officials:

“They fulfilled their duty, guaranteeing democracy in remote regions. Their commitment honors us and leaves an indelible mark on our institution.”

Aeronautical authorities are investigating the causes of the accident, which also claimed the life of the aircraft’s pilot, who has not yet been publicly identified. What is known is that the plane lost contact with the tower just two minutes after taking off, leaving behind a deep void and three names that are remembered today with respect and gratitude.
