The President of Chile, Gabriel Boricexpressed that in terms of human rights his ideology is very different from the one carried out in Venezuela, due to a “issue of principles”.
In the framework of an official visit to Argentina, he offered statements to the Clarion hours before your arrival. Among the issues that he addressed, he pointed out the human rights situation that is also experienced in Nicaragua and Cuba.
The president responded to his difference with a harsh condemnation of the governments of Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua, in which he said the following:
“It is a matter of principles. Human rights must be respected, enforced and promoted regardless of the color of the government that violates them,” Boric stressed.
“That runs, starting at home, Chile, as for Venezuela, Nicaragua, Brazil, Ukraine, Russia, Yemen, Israel, etc. Therefore, in this I make no distinctions and I believe that we have to abandon the partisan policy of only condemning those with whom we have ideological adversity”, he added.
In this sense, he noted that “that takes away legitimacy” from the cause they lead. “Therefore, in the cases you mention, we are going to be promoters of democracy and human rights.”
Gabriel Boric: Human Rights in Venezuela must be respected and asserted | How to manage it?
“Each case is different, they cannot be equated. We are collaborators of the International Contact Group, which is currently working in Mexico, with the support of Norway”, he said.
He stressed that Chile is one of the observer countries to favor a peaceful resolution, via negotiation in Venezuela. This in order to give “legitimacy to the next elections so that there is no doubt about the will of the Venezuelan people expressed at that time.”
Meanwhile, in the case of Nicaragua “the situation is different.” He considered that there was an election that does not meet the minimum democratic standards.
“Most or an important part of the opposition candidates to the regime were imprisoned or being persecuted. Not only the candidates like the case of Chamorro, but also old guerrillas like Dora María Téllez and what to say the Cervantes Prize, Don Sergio Ramírez”, he emphasized.
