G7 insists on a democratic transition and the triumph of Edmundo González is respected

The G7 Foreign Ministers said they were “deeply disturbed” by the “continued violations and abuses of human rights suffered by the political opposition, civil society and independent media” in Venezuela.


The foreign ministers of the G7, the group of seven most industrialized democracies in the world, demanded this Tuesday the 26th the release in Venezuela of all political prisoners “unjustly detained” and announced that they will continue to “support the efforts of regional partners” for a democratic transition .

“On July 28, the Venezuelan people expressed themselves clearly at the polls, voting for democratic change and supporting Edmundo González Urrutia with a significant majority,” reads the final declaration of a G7 summit held in Italy.

Three days after the Venezuelan presidential elections, the Group demanded from the National Electoral Council publish all the minutes scrutiny of the presidential elections last Sunday the 28th in which, according to the electoral body, Nicolás Maduro emerged the winner. But according to the minutes published by the opposition, the winner of those elections was Edmundo González.

“We will continue to support the efforts of regional partners to facilitate a democratic and peaceful transition with Venezuelan guidance that guarantees respect for the will of the voters,” the statement adds.

The ministers of the G7, the most industrialized group of democracies on the planet (Germany, Canada, the United States, France, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom) met in the Italian towns of Fiuggi and Anagni (center), under the rotating Italian presidency.

In their final statement, they also said they were “deeply disturbed” by the “continued violations and abuses of human rights suffered by the political opposition, civil society and independent media.”

Among these abuses, the G7 denounced “arbitrary detentions and serious restrictions on fundamental freedoms.”

“All political prisoners unjustly detained must be released,” demanded the group of powers.
