G-77 + China: the uncertain course of the “non-aligned countries”

Miguel Díaz-Canel, G77, China, Cuba

Havana Cuba. — This Wednesday, the Republic of Cuba, by virtue of holding the presidency of the so-called “Group of 77 and China” (abbreviated “G77 + China”), summoned the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the group. The meeting should take place in Havana on September 15 and 16.

It has been announced that the central theme of the Summit will be the following: “Current Development Challenges: Role of Science, Technology and Innovation.” This statement, by itself, has motivated me to make some bitter reflections of a prosodic nature and humorous intention. But it is convenient that I leave it for the end of this text.

The call was propitious for the President of the Republic voted for by only 605 compatriots, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, to appear on the National Television Newscast reading the corresponding call. I believe that the letter and the spirit of that text well deserve that we stop to make some considerations about it.

The first thing that I think should be highlighted is the unusual audacity shown by this large group of countries, which claim to be “non-aligned”, when choosing the Castro regime to lead them. At the time of its emergence, the aforementioned grouping was supposed to occupy a third position between the two great power blocs (the United States and its Western friends, on the one hand, and the Soviet Union and its socialist allies, on the other). .

Already in 1979, our country, then still led by the founder of the reigning dynasty, was appointed to preside over the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). In the middle of the war of aggression unleashed by the Soviet Union against Afghanistan, the “Maximum Leader” managed to avoid the controversial issue. In other words, in fact, our country took sides in favor of the invading great power and not of the member country that was attacked!

But that shouldn’t call our attention. Although Cuba was not formally listed as a member of the so-called “Warsaw Pact”, at that time it would not have been possible to find a State more committed and aligned with the USSR than ours! It was not for nothing that Castro I lent himself at the time to install Soviet nuclear rockets in Cuba! Or he provided the cannon fodder for the adventure of international communism in Angola and Ethiopia! And yet they elected him as President of the NAM!

On this occasion, a similar situation is observed. Happily, the USSR no longer exists. But yes Russia, headed by the dictator Vladimir Putin. This current tenant of the imposing Moscow Kremlin harbors imperial airs that Stalin himself would have envied. The majority of the countries of the world (including “non-aligned”) condemn the barbaric invasion perpetrated against Ukraine, but the “G77 + China” decides to be chaired by one of the few states in the world that has justified this brutal aggression!

For the rest, the text of the call reveals the great sympathy that the current Cuban regime feels for the saying “do what I say and not what I do.” Díaz-Canel said: “Every minute counts in the search for a solution to the pressing problems of our peoples.” And that this is expressed by the nominal head of the regime who, in order to maintain power for a little longer, lets weeks, months and years go by without adopting the urgent measures that the desperate situation in Cuba makes essential!

In another order of things, the call also calls for “a fairer relationship and a truly democratic order.” But that is for external consumption. Within Cuba, exclusion and injustice reign, and the most authoritarian and undemocratic regime that can be conceived is maintained at all costs. In short, the Caribbean communists, as the popular saying goes, insist on being “light on the street and darkness at home”.

At the media level, the video of the call diazcanelista it suffers from a stretch that is observed with the naked eye. The Cuban Head of State concludes with a grimace that apparently wanted to be a smile; but in that case reality was a thousand miles from that supposed intention. He stands out, by contrast, with the frank laugh that the same character exhibited at the end of the Third Meeting for Peace in Colombiawhich took place a few days ago.

It means that the president is apt to make trips that express an intimate joy and, apparently, even sincere. Therefore, the pitiful grimace that ends the aforementioned speech shows that in Cuba, apart from the many that we already knew, there is another activity that is going really badly. To the numerous disasters that the Island suffers, we must add the terrible work carried out by none other than those in charge of the president’s public image, appointed —I suppose— by the inept Ideological Department.

I said at the beginning of this text that I was thinking of venturing into the field of prosody. For the benefit of non-Cuban readers, it is convenient to specify a custom that our compatriots from the former province of Oriente have: that of not pronouncing final esses at all.

In this they clearly surpass the inhabitants of the areas between Pinar del Río and Camagüey. These don’t usually (we don’t usually) clearly pronounce those S’s, but we say something instead. When pronouncing “javelinist” -let’s say- one of those “western-central” will replace the sound “s” by a kind of “h” gently aspirated. In short, it will say something like “jabalinhta”.

Not an oriental With all precision he will say “javelin”, with which only the context will allow us to know if he is referring to an athlete of that sport specialty, or to one of the implements that he usually throws, only small. Well then, that of the “Current Development Challenges” that the Castroites have come up with as the motto of the future Summit, makes me wonder: Hasn’t one of the many “revolutionary leaders” from the former province come up with that name? Eastern!

Taking into account the situation of generalized disaster in which our country is plunged, instead of “challenges” would he not have wanted to refer to the “remnants” of development?
