Javier Tarazona, director of Fundaredes, has been detained for two years in the vicinity of Sebin. The NGO indicated that his director suffers from 10 different pathologies and consumes 19 medications a day, for which his life is at risk.

Javier Tarazona, director of the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Fundaredes, turns two this Sunday, July 2, detained at the facilities of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin), after being arbitrarily arrested in July 2021 and accused of «terrorism, incitement to hatred and treason against the fatherland».

In this sense, Fundaredes made public a campaign with which it seeks to make visible “how a human rights defender in Venezuela is illegally deprived of liberty at the Sebin headquarters in El Helicoide.” The campaign is called: #TwoYearsOfInjustice, with which the deteriorating health of Tarazona is denounced.

In a note published by the NGO, it was indicated that Tarazona suffers from 10 different pathologies and consumes 19 medications a day, for which her life is at risk.

After his visit to Venezuela on January 28, 2023, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, requested the release of all political prisoners, and stated that his office is closely monitoring the situation of various detainees, including Tarazona.

The activist and director of Fundaredes was arrested along with his brother Rafael Tarazona and the lawyer Omar de Dios García, “without mediating arguments, procedural instruments or judicial order”, notes a report published by the organization.

The arrest of the NGO representatives occurred in the midst of filing a complaint with the Public Ministry for harassment and persecution by police officers, Sebin agents and unidentified subjects, in the city of Coro, Falcón state.

Omar de Dios García and Rafael Tarazona were later released under a presentation regime.

The director of Fundaredes is accused of the alleged crimes of incitement to hatred and terrorism, due to the NGO’s complaints about the presence of irregular groups in various states on the Venezuelan border, as well as the clashes between the National Armed Forces and alleged elements of the FARC and ELN dissidents in Apure state.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) modified, in November of last year, the protection measures in favor of Javier Tarazona and even They showed their willingness to visit the country to review their prison conditions. This is due to the repeated complaints of torture and cruel treatment against him.

The European Union delegation in Venezuela has also ruled on the case, declaring Tarazona’s innocence and the need for the Office of the UN High Commissioner to have access to the activist, taking into account his fragile state of health.
