The lawyer Clara Ramírez, director (e) of Fundaredes, denounced this Wednesday, March 7, during the 186 period of public hearing sessions of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), which takes place in Los Angeles, California, the case of the director of this NGO, Javier Tarazona, as part of the report on relatives of political prisoners and people who are beneficiaries of precautionary measures who are deprived of liberty in Venezuela.
Ramírez insisted that Tarazona, arbitrarily detained since July 2, 2021, has been subjected to various humiliations. “He has been the victim of torture, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment after his arrest, and at this time it has been 613 days since his arrest,” quoted the Press release of Fundaredes.
Clara Ramírez stressed that “when talking about the issue of women who are also victims, the precautionary measure that the commission granted to Javier Tarazona in 2020 was extended to his mother and eldest son, but nevertheless, the Venezuelan State did not respect it, since after his arrest, Sebin broke into his home, transferring his mother, Mrs. Teresa de Jesús Sánchez, to an unknown place for a few hours, breaking the precautionary measure that he also had.”
“The Venezuelan State has not complied to this day with any of the measures requested by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, adding that the activist and human rights defender suffers from high blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmia, hyperinsulinism, grade 2 venous insufficiency, asthma , permanent allergy, severe pulmonary fibrosis, irritable colon, eye strain, psoriasis, blepharospasm, rectal fissures and alopecia as a consequence of limited exposure to the sun”, said Oswalo Cáceres, Fundaredes activist.
Cáceres thanked the IACHR for following up on the precautionary measure applied to Javier Tarazona through the resolution dated October 30, 2022, “and for in turn requesting the Venezuelan State to ensure and guarantee life and personal integrity In addition, Tarazona must have lighting, adequate ventilation, as well as the possibility of access to recreation spaces.
The IACHR request also indicates that the State must avoid any type of isolation against the beneficiary or any other punishment against him. “Javier Tarazona must receive quality medical care and treatment, he must be allowed access to private doctors due to his delicate health condition,” Cáceres insisted.
Regarding the criminal proceeding in which he is charged with the crimes of incitement to hatred, treason, and terrorism, the IACHR was informed that the oral and public trial hearing of Javier Tarazona, as well as Rafael Tarazona and Omar de Dios García, which was interrupted in October 2022, restarting from scratch in December, for which FundaRedes appreciated that the conditions of confinement of the director of this organization are taken into account, since he is the only defender of human rights deprived of liberty in Venezuela.
