Funarj museums join the anti-racist network of Instituto Pretos Novos

The Anita Mantuano Arts Foundation of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Funarj) joined the Anti-Racist Museums Program of the Instituto de Pesquisa e Memória Pretos Novos (IPN – Museu Memorial). The information was given this Tuesday (13) by Funarj, which considers the accession to be an unprecedented milestone among the state’s cultural facilities, “for incorporating the anti-racist perspective in museum and institutional practices in a structured way.”Funarj museums join the anti-racist network of Instituto Pretos Novos

Membership involves the following Funarj museums:

  • Antonio Parreiras Museum (Niterói);
  • Ingá Museum (Niterói);
  • Carmen Miranda Museum (Flamengo, south of Rio);
  • Casa de Oliveira Vianna (Niterói);
  • Casa da Marquesa de Santos (São Cristóvão, north of Rio);
  • and Casa de Euclides da Cunha (Cantagalo).

The IPN Anti-Racist Museums Program aims to go beyond expository narratives, bringing this perspective to management policies, team formation and institutional actions developed by participating museums.

The idea is to promote structural reflections and the implementation of changes that actually contribute to ethnic-racial equity in the cultural sector.

Upon joining the Program, Funarj becomes part of a network dedicated to promoting ethnic-racial equity, valuing Afro-indigenous traditions and strengthening anti-racist cultural policies.

Advance

In the assessment of Funarj’s museum coordinator, Wallace Almeida, the institution’s participation in the Program represents an advance in cultural management and “an institutional advance in strengthening practices aligned with equity and diversity in the museum field”.

“This is an initiative that contributes to the qualification of management, team building and cultural actions, reaffirming the role of public museums as spaces for dialogue, memory and social responsibility”, he commented.

At Funarj, the program will feature seminars, workshops and training actions aimed at reflection, the exchange of experiences and the strengthening of institutional practices committed to combating racism, highlighted the foundation’s press office.
