The general secretary of Fuerza Popular, Luis Galarreta, ratified his group’s support for Fernando Rospigliosi, who will continue to serve as first vice president of Congress. According to Galarreta, this decision has had the consensus of the party leadership since the beginning of the parliamentary succession process.
These statements came after Fernando Rospigliosi assumed office as interim president of Congress, following the vacancy of Dina Boluarte and the assumption of José Jerí as president, despite the fact that the Fujimori party assured in a statement that it would not preside over the transitional government or the Board of Directors of Congress.
Given speculation of friction within the party, Galarreta came out to specify that the support for Rospigliosi was an institutional decision made from the first moment.
“It is not about interrupting the constitutional deadlines. The permanence of Fernando Rospigliosi responds to a political agreement that seeks to preserve the stability of Congress,” he said on Canal N.
Regarding the statements of Congressman Ernesto Bustamante, who assured that his party would not integrate the cabinet or the Board of Directors, the general secretary minimized any sign of internal division and attributed the discrepancy to a possible confusion in the interpretation of the statements.
“If a congressman [se pronunció individualmente] that is his own harvest, his reading,” he said.
Galarreta also recognized that assuming responsibilities in leading Congress during an electoral process can represent a political cost for Fuerza Popular. However, he assured that the party’s priority is to contribute to governability and ensure institutional continuity.
“We have assumed this political cost because we believe that democratic stability is above party calculations, even in complex moments such as those experienced during Dina Boluarte’s administration,” he concluded.
