Border Deputies propose adjustments to IMESI to balance competition in sale

A group of deputies and deputies of border departments presented on Tuesday a proposal to expand the partial exemption regime of the Internal Specific Tax (IMESI) applied to the sale of fuels in bordering areas of the country.

The initiative seeks to strengthen the competitiveness of the national service stations against foreigners, and mitigate the economic impact that border communities face.

The proposal raises a stepped discounts according to the distance to the border, with the following sections:

  • Up to 20 km from the border: between 32% and 40% discount.
  • Between 20 and 60 km: 24% discount.
  • Between 60 and 80 km: 15% discount.

Legislators claim that it is a specific measure to defend employment, strengthen local trade and guarantee conditions of equality for the regions most affected by the price difference with neighboring countries.

The written exhibition was signed by the deputies and deputies Graciela Echenique (Cerro Largo), Miriam Britos (Artigas), Mercedes Long (Río Negro), Fabricio Núñez (Rocha), Fiorella Galliázi (Salto) and Fermín Farinha (Paysandú), all representatives of areas where competitiveness in the fuel sector is directly affected by the nearby markets.

The drivers of the measure expect the proposal to be analyzed by the Executive Power and become an effective tool to support the service stations and workers of the deep interior of the country.
