From which areas are there product shortages?

Disposable diapers, toilet paper, fertilizers, chemical products and oranges, among other products from China, are in short supply due to the lack of raw material for their manufacture and the delay in the departure of containers from other countries to supply Dominican businesses.

Various productive sectors at the international level have suffered consequences of the Russian invasion in Ukraine and the logistics sector is not the exception, which, by its nature, must wait for the orders to be ready for transport, a situation that affects the consumer.

The general manager of Grupo Eulen Dominican Republic, Karina Castellanos, reported yesterday that, as a result of the war, few units of the aforementioned items and other products from China will be seen on the shelves of supermarkets and other businesses. “The orange is not reaching the supermarkets; before they were brought from China and now they are being bought in Peru,” she said.

Although different alternatives have been sought to import products from other countries to meet the demand for items in the basic basket, the lack of raw materials aggravates the situation.

In the case of the agricultural sector, which uses fertilizers and fertilizers, they have resorted to replacing them with dolomite and phosphorus that are bought from merchants in Peru, because the fertilizer imported from the Asian country and other nations has been limited due to lack of materials for its elaboration.

Chance

The representative of Eulen, a company that offers logistics services internationally, participated in a conversation with the press where she offered details of some challenges and opportunities that, from her point of view as a service company, can be used to continue directing the country’s destination. as a logistics distribution and assembly hub.

Participating in the virtual meeting were Mario Vargas, representative of Costa Rica, and Antonio Pérez, from Panama, who agreed that one of the challenges in the sector is the lack of properly adequate infrastructure in ports so that items arrive during the transfer process. in consumer-friendly conditions. In addition, they reported that there is a lack of containers internationally, which affects the supply chain.

In this sense, Castellanos considered that the lack of containers could be an opportunity for the country to start exporting more products and as a chance to offer the export service to other territories that need to buy articles and products.

“The Dominican Republic has been called the island of medical instruments, which leads to becoming a regional logistics hub,” he considered.
