Fans of the “Shrek” saga have reasons to celebrate. Actor Eddie Murphy, original voice of Burro, has revealed a promising update on the next DreamWorks projects, confirming that a solo film focused on her charismatic character is under development. This news comes while “Shrek 5” continues its production phase.
In a conversation with Screenrant, Murphy declared that he continues to record the voices for “Shrek 5” and that in September of this year he will begin with the dialogues for the donkey film. The actor also advanced a possible launch window for this spin-off, placing it in 2028. “They are still dubbing. We continue in the cabin, and literally, we continue doing Shrek. We started in September with donkey, we are doing one of a donkey, and that will be within three years, but we have been with Shrek 5 for about two years,” Murphy explained.
Confirming that it will be a feature film for cinemas and not a television series, Murphy shared details about the spin-off plot: “Burro will have his own little story with his Dragon wife and his children, half dragon and half donkeys. They have written a funny story. We are doing it, and we will start in September.” This film will focus on the Burro family, which includes its six children: Debbie, Coco, Bananas, Peanut, Parfait and Eclair.
The confirmation of a donkey film, in the style of the successful spin-offs of “the cat with boots”, suggests that the character will have a central adventure, something that had remained in the background as the main saga advanced. In addition, donkey is likely to maintain the redesign controversial of characters seen in “Shrek 5”. If Murphy’s information is concretized, fans can enjoy the donkey movie in 2028.
