a section of National Party who defines himself as a Wilsonist would be seeking to form a “progressive wing” within the party of right, supposedly to give continuity to the policy of the late Jorge Larrañaga who, in his opinion, were progressives. One of the meetings of this sector was held in Tacuarembó during a gathering of white leaders at the Fiesta de la Patria Gaucha, on March 10.
The host of the meeting, which is a classic for the National Party, was the local mayor, Wilson Ezquerra, who coordinated the talks together with his co-religionist, the mayor of Soriano, Guillermo Besozzi. Also present was the former Director General of the Secretariat of the Ministry of the Interior, Luis Calabria, who left the Alianza Nacional sector to support the presidential candidacy of the Secretary of the Presidency, Álvaro Delgado.
Seeking votes in “progressivism” and ultra-conservatism
In opposition to this supposed progressive and modern proposal, Delgado would be approaching one of the most ultra-conservative sectors of the PN: that of the evangelist Álvaro Dastugue.
The former right-wing legislator, leader of the Esperanza Nacional sector, is a member of the Misión Vida evangelical church, which has an agenda, precisely, against rights obtained by progressive movements, such as abortion, equal marriage, the trans law and others.
Together with Carlos Iafigliola (Movimiento Adelante Pro Vida y Familia), they led the referendum against the Trans Law, which was a failure for the conservative cause of these legislators.
