From Justa to Carmela: the incomparable Alina Rodríguez

Fallece la reconocida actriz cubana Alina Rodríguez

Mexico City, Mexico-. When Alina Rodríguez graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in 1982, she was not as young as most graduates. She was then over 30 years old and had barely found previous acting jobs that made her popular.

However, thanks to the talent she poured out when she acted, Alina later became not only one of the most popular actresses in Cuba, but also one of the most praised by critics.

Four years after graduating, the opportunity came to make his film debut, with a small role, under the direction of Daniel Díaz. There he was able to rub shoulders with established artists such as Mirta Ibarra, Susana Pérez and Jorge Villazón.

However, in 1990 her character in the film “María Antonia”, directed by Sergio Giral, established her in the cinema, in addition to earning her an award at the New York Latino Festival.

Alina, in addition to being an excellent interpreter, those who knew her agree that she was a very honest woman who said what she thought and did not usually keep anything to herself.

“I am a more outward, more passionate woman. I don’t think about them too much.” defined herself on one occasion.

Coincidentally (or maybe not) two of the characters who immortalized her were precisely such women: transparent.

How can we forget that temperamental cry that resounded on the screens of every Cuban home: Justaaaaaaaa when they broadcast wild land?

And that, the name of Justa became the second of the great Alina Rodríguez, who would later add a third, that of the teacher Carmela in the Ernesto Daranas film, “Conducta”.

In “Conducta” she played a teacher dedicated to her students; Straight but empathetic, demanding but understanding. Carmela, more than a simple educator, became the only refuge for Chala, a child with an alcoholic mother who hardly paid attention to him.

“For me, Carmela symbolizes all the people who have worked hard, who have made an effort, who want to do things well, who are against dogmatism, everything that is around them that can hinder them. For me that symbolizes Carmela ”, commented after the release of the film.

The outstanding actress died in Havana on July 27, 2015, at the age of 63, a victim of cancer.
