From discontent to mobilizations: the open fronts of the Sheinbaum government

For Marco Iván Vargas, political analyst and former professor at the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí, although the discontent is not generalized, it has gained strength with several open fronts and is beginning to be “a risk for the government.”

“All these conflicts are eroding the credibility of order and stability that they offer us every morning that ‘the house is in order’, but you turn to the streets, the highways, the economy and the house is not in order. Sooner or later, that narrative is going to fall,” he warns.

Sheinbaum became President of the Republic as the most voted candidate in the history of Mexico with 33 million 226,602 votes who represented 59.35% of the votes and began his administration with an approval of 67%, but little by little he increased support for his administration until reaching 85% in February 2025.

In that period, complicated situations arose for the Sheinbaum Government, such as the discovery of the training center in the Teuchitlan Ranchthe controversy over the accusation against Hernán Bermúdez, Secretary of Security of Tabasco in the senator’s government Adam Augusto Lopez Hernandezwho was linked to the criminal organization “La Barredora”, as well as criticism for trips abroad in which Morenistas incurred.

However, since it was one year old, analysts observe the beginning of a crisis that triggered the emergency due to the floods caused by the “tropical disturbance 90-E” and left effects in Hidalgo, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí and Veracruz.

“I consider that what we are observing is a crisis because there are already many disagreements. It begins with the floods, with difficult encounters, but then comes the murder of Carlos Manzo, then with the (so-called) march of Generation Z,” says Azucena Rojas, professor at Tecnológico de Monterrey.

On November 15 and 20, some young people from “Generation Z” called to demonstrate in the streets of Mexico City and other states due to insecurity in the country. However, the call was joined by adults with other demands and other movements such as that of the Sombrero, linked to the former municipal president of Uruapan Carlos Manzo, to demand security in a country.

Also due to security issues, transporters mobilized this week, blocking roads in the country to denounce the lack of security on the highways and extortions on them from both members of organized crime and state and municipal police.

According to transportitas, although there are 39% decrease in motor transport theft between 2018 and 2024, This one has become more violent.

The movement of transporters was joined by farmers, who are against the reform of the presidential Water Law that will be discussed in the Chamber of Deputies, after they affirm that if approved, the transmission of concession titles for the use of water between individuals as is done now will no longer be possible.

The proposal seeks that once the permit period ends, the concessionaires must be returned to the National Water Commission (Conagua) to be reassigned again, which the farmers point out that with this, they are condemned to their land being worth less.

Given both claims, the president affirms that there is government dialogue, but considers that behind the demonstrations there is interest in defending privileges.

Another of the open fronts is headed by the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE). In their demand that the ISSSTE Law and the educational reform be repealed, the teachers have warned that they will follow the president in her public activities and if necessary they proposed “boycotting” the 2026 Soccer World Cup.

“If there is no solution, there will be no World Cup!” and “If there is no solution, your ball will not roll!”, they warned on November 13.

Last weekend the teachers of the Coordinadora protested at several of the president’s events in Oaxaca and during a transfer, they intercepted the van that was transporting her and got her to sign commitments with local demands.
