MIAMI, United States. – The micro-dump that existed on the banks of the Central Highway in the Pedro Pompa neighborhood, in Bayamo, was transformed into an ecological park after the complaint of CubaNetin April of this year. The dump, which was a serious health and pollution problem for the residents, was moved to another location and replaced by a recreational space with political murals made by SMEs.

“The dump no longer exists. They made an ecological park and put up murals. The dump was moved to another place and political events and community meetings were held here. INDER [Instituto Nacional de Deportes, Educación Física y Recreación]because supposedly a recreation area was going to be built in this whole part of the city. They also put in lighting,” he says. a new video the person responsible for the initial complaint.

The site, which was once full of rubbish, has now been converted into a community-use area, with new lighting installations and a marked political character. For some residents in the area interviewed by CubaNetthe conversion of the dump into a park is a significant improvement: “The best idea these people had [dirigentes locales] there, because that was an area that was almost lost.”

However, not all residents of the Pedro Pompa neighborhood are completely satisfied with the solution: “Any time the guard or whoever is looking after it gets dizzy, they will start throwing garbage again. Once they throw it out, they will throw it out,” a young man told this newspaper.

While celebrating the creation of the park, the people of Bayamo also criticize that it is a partial solution that does not ensure the management of waste in the long term.

“At least for the people who live here that is [el microvertedero] “It was disrespectful and unhygienic to have a place full of garbage where there could be many animals and diseases…”, said another young man.

Meanwhile, another neighbour stressed: “It is solving one part, but the other is that people now have nowhere to throw their rubbish. The problem is not solved completely. You have to go somewhere else to throw it away, so it is the same rubbish bin that has been moved.”
