At the end of 2022, Colombia sent a shipment of fresh mango for the first time to the United States, which will enter the market in that country.
This shipment left the city of Santa Marta for the port of Savannah, Georgia, arriving on December 27.
After several years of joint work between both nations, the US Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) endorsed the Colombian product for the market in that country.
The Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism pointed out: “The first export of fresh mangoes to the United States represents a great opportunity to consolidate the exportable supply of fresh fruits.”
The fruit that was exported is grown in Palmira and packed in Frutales las Lajas in the municipality of Zarzal in Valle del Cauca.
“We will continue working to promote national food production to achieve food sovereignty,” said the minister.
US$552 million worth of fresh mangoes entered the United States last year alone, mainly from Peru and Mexico.
In several departments this fruit is cultivated
Likewise, with this export a new path is opened for Colombian farmers “generating formal employment and opportunities in rural areas of the country.”
Prior to this, the shipment of mangoes completes a list of 108 fresh products that are being sent regularly to the United States.
This fruit is currently being exported to eight countries including Canada, France, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
According to the Colombian Ministry of Agriculture, mangoes have a good chance of becoming a star product in export in the country.
In Colombia, its production throughout the year can be carried out on some 35,000 hectares in 22 of the 32 departments that are currently dedicated to its cultivation.
