Through a statement signed by Fernando Pereira, president of the Frente Amplio, the political force expressed its solidarity with the workers and the Argentine people in the face of the recent decision to close key institutions for the defense of Human Rights, such as the Cultural Center of the Haroldo Conti Memory and the National Memory Archive.
In the message, the Frente Amplio highlighted the historical ties between Uruguay and Argentina, underlining that “Uruguayans and Argentines have felt like brothers at heart” both in moments of joy and in “those moments of pain and horror.” In this sense, the letter emphasizes the importance of these institutions in the construction of collective memory and in the fight against impunity.
The statement also highlights that, as the majority political force in the 2024 national elections, which brought Yamandú Orsi to the presidency of Uruguay, the Frente Amplio considers it essential “to express our energetic repudiation of the intention to close Latin American icons of defense and dissemination of Human Rights. Likewise, it expresses special concern about the dismissals in the National Secretariat of Human Rights of Argentina, describing them as “abusive and violent.”
The text concludes by reaffirming the commitment to the slogan “Never Again State Terrorism”, pointing out that the horrors and resistance during the dictatorships “marked the memory of our people.”
For Truth, Justice and Memory, the statement closes, adding: “They have not defeated us nor will they be able to.”
