French municipality opens its doors to boxers from Cuba

The mayor of the town located in the Paris Region, François Asensi, gave his approval to receive a delegation of boxers and trainers from the island, who will be able to access modern facilities such as the Jean Guimier Sports Complex, which includes a boxing gym, weight room, swimming pool and others.

The commune would be responsible for the expenses of accommodation and internal transport of the guests, in a gesture in tune with the priority that its authorities give to sport and with the desire to support the appointments under the five Olympic and Paralympic rings in the French capital, for the sake of making them a true popular festival.

Asensi, mayor of Tremblay-en-France since 1991, stressed the importance of defending the healthy values of Olympism and keeping them away from mercantilist approaches.

The president of CubaCoop, Víctor Fernández, told Prensa Latina that this decision represents the first success of the association’s initiative to facilitate training on French soil for athletes from the island on their way to Paris-2024, in coordination with authorities and federations of the largest of the Antilles.

In the middle of this month, Fernández revealed the project consisting of seeking the support of French cities for Cuban sports, a sector also strongly impacted by the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States.

Regarding the presence of the boxers in Tremblay-en-France, he specified that a next step is coordination with the Cuban side regarding their interests and dates.

Boxing is considered the flagship sport on the island and a traditional source of crowns and medals at the Olympic Games, world championships, and regional events and events.

In the Tokyo 2020 summer games, held last year, the boxers from the largest of the Antilles won first place by country and contributed four gold medals and one bronze to the delegation of the Caribbean nation, which with those titles climbed up to 14th place in the general medal table.

According to Fernández, the mayor of Tremblay-en-France also agreed to study the participation of the commune in the CubaCoop project to bring together cities in France and Cuba to collaborate, and in this case the commune of the Parisian region could work with the Havana municipality of Boyeros.
