Unexpected news, but celebrated by thousands of followers, surprised those Freddie Mercury fans in the last hours: the Royal Mint officially launched a commemorative coin in tribute to the legend of Queen, marking a new recognition of her musical legacy that remains valid decades later.
This tribute, which combines history, music and philately, is part of the series ‘Legends of Music’which has already paid tribute to artists such as David Bowie, George Michael and Paul McCartney, consolidating Mercury as one of the great icons of music worldwide.
The launch coincides with ehe 40th anniversary of the Live Aid concert (1985), considered one of the most emblematic moments in Mercury’s career, where his presence on stage became a cultural milestone that is still remembered by millions of people today.

Additionally, the coin celebrates the anniversary of the release of his first solo album, “Mr Bad Guy”, consolidating Mercury’s figure not only as the leader of Queen, but as an integral and versatile artist.
What is the design of the coin?
The design of the coin portrays the Most iconic Freddie Mercury: He appears on stage in the legendary yellow jacket he wore at Live Aid, holding the microphone and projecting his unmistakable energy.
Around the edge, a pentagram symbolizes his impressive four-octave vocal range, while his engraved signature adds a personal touch that makes the coin a unique object for collectors and fans.
The first coin was officially minted by Kashmira Bulsara, sister of the artist, at the headquarters of the Royal Mint in Wales.
According to media reports, a portion of the sales will go to the Mercury Phoenix Trust, the foundation created in memory of the singer for the fight against HIV/AIDS.

The series also includes a special version in fine gold, which will be auctioned for charity, allowing his musical legacy to also have a positive impact on social causes.
There are different versions of the currency. The version “uncirculated”, which is not intended for normal circulation, is priced at approximately £18.50. The 2oz limited edition in fine gold costs around £9,350 and will be auctioned to support the Mercury Phoenix Trust, a gesture that blends collecting with philanthropy and directly honors the artist’s memory.
Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coins at the Royal Mint, said that the design “captures the electric energy of Freddie Mercury as an artist” and highlights that this initiative not only recognizes his talent, but also grants him official recognition that he never received in life, since Mercury was never distinguished with royal honors.
