The Federation of Colombian Insurers (Phasecolda) warned on Tuesday that fraud is bleeding to death the Compulsory Traffic Accident Insurance (Soat) model.

During the presentation of the report “The Soat is in intensive care”, The president of Fasecolda, Miguel Gómez Martínez, explained that some health providers inflate the care of the injured to the limits allowed by the coverage, a situation that is leaving these insurances without resources and putting at risk the care of those who really need it.
Gómez Martínez drew attention to this problem in order to stop this situation, since traffic accidents are one of the main causes of death in Colombia.

“For 2022, a record figure in history is estimated: 940,000 injured in the streets and more than 7,600 deaths. This is a serious public health problem that is the second leading cause of violent death in Colombia.”said the Executive President of Fasecolda at the press conference in which he launched this warning.
He added that “The Soat insurance model made it possible to overcome, for those injured in traffic accidents, the inhuman walk of death”but stated that “More and more he looks like a terminally ill patient that no one wants to take care of.”
The president of Fasecolda said that the Soat is in intensive care and that urgent action is required by the government, the private sector and road actors to save it.
