Francisco Lindor will undergo surgery for an injury to his left hand.

New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor, from Puerto Rico, will undergo surgery on his left hand this Wednesday, according to team manager Carlos Mendoza, who announced this at spring training in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

The team expects Lindor’s rehabilitation to take four to six weeks, meaning he could be ready to play in the opening game at the end of March. “I feel optimistic that Lindor will continue to be the same player,” Mendoza told the press.

A few days ago, Lindor reported to the Mets’ spring training camp and was fielding ground balls at shortstop.

This will be Lindor’s second surgery of the offseason. Last October, he underwent a debridement procedure on his elbow, which prevented him from being on Puerto Rico’s roster for the World Baseball Classic due to unresolved contract issues.

Mets president of baseball operations, David Stearns, indicated Tuesday that the Mets were not involved in Lindor’s absence from the tournament.

Carlos Beltrán discussed the challenges in assembling Puerto Rico’s team for the Classic, mentioning the absences of Lindor, Carlos Correa, and Javier Báez. “We had nothing to do with that. The truth is, I don’t know why they didn’t authorize him. They didn’t approve his insurance. The clubs have nothing to do with that. The MLBPA and Major League Baseball handle all of that. The truth is, I don’t know why,” I have stated.
