France: there is no alternative, two states

United Nations. The solution of two states to put an end to the Israelo-Palestinian conflict that already meets more than seven decades yesterday received strong support at the UN, during a ministerial conference convened by the General Assembly, which was boycotted by the United States and Israel.

After almost two years of Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza, “only a political solution of two states allows to respond to the legitimate aspirations of Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace and security. There is no alternative,” said French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot.

“It is illusory to wait for a durable fire without having a common vision of postwar in Gaza, without drawing a political horizon and an alternative to the permanent state of war,” he insisted.

The meeting, which is presided over with Saudi Arabia, takes place four days after the French president, Emmanuel Macron, announced that his country will formally recognize the Palestinian State in the next UN General Assembly in September.

At least 142 of the 193 UN members recognize the Palestinian State proclaimed by Palestinian leaders in exile in 1988, according to an AFP count.

But neither the United States nor Israel participate in the meeting. The State Department described it as “advertising ruse” that will make the search for peace and “reward for terrorism” difficult. On his side, Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, said “does not promote a solution.”

However, Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal Bin Farhan, is confident that US President Donald Trump be “a catalyst to end the immediate crisis in Gaza and, potentially, to resolve the long-term Palestinian-Israeli conflict.”

“An independent Palestinian state is the key to peace in the region,” he said, and said that his creation is the condition for the normalization of relations with Israel.

For the Spanish Chancellor, José Manuel Albares, both the Israeli people and the Palestinian people “have the right to a future in security and peace.”

“Further than ever”

But the more than 21 months of war in Gaza, the continuous expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and the statements of Israeli officials of annexing occupied territory, fear that a Palestinian State becomes impossible.

The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, recalled that “the solution of two states is further than ever.”

“Let’s be clear, the insidious annexation of the West Bank is illegal. Gaza’s large -scale destruction is intolerable, it must stop,” he insisted, and denounced the “unilateral” actions that could “undermine forever” the solution of two states.

For his part, the Palestinian Prime Minister, Mohammad Mustafa, urged Hamas, to control Gaza, to “deliver weapons and control” to the Palestinian authority, which governs the West Bank. He also asked Israel to retire “completely” from the territory.

The state of Palestine, he said, is willing to “assume the full responsibility of the government and security in Gaza, with Arab and international support.”

The main Israeli oenegés, B WTelem and doctors for Human Rights, said on Monday that Israel is committing a “genocide” in the Gaza Strip, according to their own investigations.
