After two months of protests and strikes, French President Emmanuel Macron decided to approve a controversial pension reform by decree, thus facing a vote of no confidence and new protests. But the reason for the protests – the increase in the retirement age from 62 to 64 years – is a reasonable measure. Now that people are living longer, following the current standard of retiring at 60 or 60-something means having a longer unproductive phase, and that has financial implications.
It is appropriate now to set a higher retirement age in the world in general; the problem is that people understand and assimilate it.
