Dr. Guillermo Sequera commented in an interview with Radio 1000 that the so-called fourth wave of COVID-19 is very advanced, especially in Asunción and the Metropolitan Area.
He pointed out that both Capital and a sector of the Central Department are located at level 4 of high community circulation of the virus.
“In any meeting of 10 people there are at least one or two who are with the virus, with or without symptoms, I think there is no family group that today does not have cases of COVID-19 again,” he explained.
Regarding the number of hospitalizations, he reported that there are currently 200 hospitalized due to the disease, of which 10% are in intensive care units.
The senior official of the health portfolio said that the projections indicate that this new wave will have a lower impact than the one registered in the months of January and February of this year.
Sequera explained that the predominant variant is omicron, which has already been shown to have less lethality than other strains. However, he cautioned that the situation should not be taken lightly as there may eventually be some sub-lineages in circulation.
