Fourteen students and one teacher were killed today after a shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.
The 18-year-old suspect, a student at Uvalde High School, is also dead. “He horribly and incomprehensibly shot and killed 14 students and one teacher,” Texas Governor Greg Abbott said during a news conference.
The attacker entered the elementary school around noon and opened fire. He also allegedly shot his grandmother before entering the school. Identified by police sources as Salvador Ramos, he had a pistol and possibly a rifle as well.
Two police officers who responded to the incident were among the injured. They are expected to survive.
Uvalde Memorial Hospital said 15 students were being treated in the hospital’s emergency department.Two patients were flown to San Antonio for treatment.A 45-year-old man was also hospitalized after being grazed by a bullet, the hospital said.
University Health in San Antonio said it had two patients from the shooting: a 66-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl, both in critical condition.
Two adult victims are being treated at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, according to an Army official. San Antonio Children’s Hospital said it also received patients from the shooting.
Uvalde is a city of about 16,000 people, located about 85 miles west of San Antonio, Texas. The shooting came four years after a gunman fatally shot 10 people at Santa Fe High School in the Houston area.
It is the deadliest incident at an American elementary school since the attack on Sandy Hook, Connecticut, nearly a decade ago.
The fatalities were overwhelmingly second, third, and fourth grade children.
