A group of 14 countries that make up the Organization of American States (OAS) issued a statement on the afternoon of Wednesday, January 15, in which they expressed their rejection of the act of inauguration of President Nicolás Maduro, since in their opinion it lacks legitimacy and evidence to support the proclamation of the National Electoral Council that gave him victory last year. In the text, Argentina, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, United States, Jamaica, Guatemala, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic and Uruguay, demanded that those in power in Venezuela restore the constitutional order in the country, after considering that Edmundo González Urrutia was the winner of the elections, just as they requested the release of all national and foreign political prisoners.
Likewise, these OAS countries requested that human rights, fundamental freedoms such as the right to life, liberty and personal security, peaceful assembly and exercise their civil rights without reprisals be respected; as well as complying with the provisions of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
