Four Venezuelans kidnapped by FARC dissidents are released

The four young people kidnapped by FARC dissidents since last March 13, were received by the delegated defender for Conflict Prevention, the regional defender of Arauca and the bishop of the Diocese of Arauca.


Four young Venezuelans who for two weeks had been in the hands of the dissidents of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in Arauca, a Colombian department on the border with Venezuela, were released. This was reported this Wednesday, March 29, by the Colombian Ombudsman’s Office.

Thanks to a humanitarian mission made up of the Colombian Ombudsman’s Office and the Diocese of Arauca, the young people who were being held by the Martín Villa Tenth Front of the Central General Staff, which is the main dissidence of the FARC, were released.

According to information published by the Ombudsman through a statementthe young people who were in the hands of the FARC dissidents since last March 13, are “in good health conditions” and were transferred to a safe place so that they could be reunited with their families.

«From the Ombudsman we once again urge illegal groups to join the consolidation of peace in Colombia. We also ask you to respect the civilian population and comply with the rules of International Humanitarian Law,” the Ombudsman requested in the letter.

In Arauca there is a presence, above all, of this dissidence of the FARC and the guerrilla of the National Liberation Army (ELN), which since last year have been carrying out an armed struggle for control of this vast plains territory on the border with Venezuela, a country where protects and operates the guerrilla.

ELN attack

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, asked to review the peace process with the National Liberation Army (ELN), after this group carried out an attack with explosives in Catatumbo that left nine soldiers dead. The president convened a consultation with the government delegation at the ELN table to the guarantor and accompanying countries.

Petro explained that among the dead soldiers, seven were young men who were doing their military service.

Regarding the attack, according to preliminary reports, the National Army platoon, belonging to the energetic road battalion number 10, was in territorial control operations in the region when the ELN attacked them. The reports show that the dissident organization attacked the military base with tattoos.
