Four Cuban para athletes leave official delegation in Monterrey, Mexico

MIAMI, United States.- Four members of the Cuban delegation attending the Monterrey 2022 Mexican Paraathletics Open left the island team in recent hours, reported the sports magazine Play Off Magazine.

According to a source consulted by Play OFF, the four athletes, who left the team on Monday night, were scheduled to participate in the competition that starts on July 21.

So far, three of the four athletes have been identified: sprinter Christian Carlos Guillén (T-47), Elvis Nules (400 meters) and Lázaro Yarlo Rodríguez (T-64) jumper.

“Headed by Paralympic champions Robiel Yankiel Sol (T-47), long jump, and Lenier Savon (T-12), (sprinter)”, the para-athletes had arrived in the Mexican city of Monterrey on Monday. The event is scheduled to end on July 23.

According to the Play Off note, “in the previous stop of the Grand Prix, held in Tunisia, the Cuban representatives had won four gold, five silver and one bronze medals”.

This Wednesday it became known, also through Play Off Magazine and other specialized baseball media, that Cuban baseball players Yosvany Ávalos (pitcher) and Alfredo Fadraga (catcher) they were banned for life to practice sports in Cuba for trying to leave the national delegation.

Ávalos and Fadraga had traveled last June with the national team to Aguascalientes, Mexico, to participate in the U-23 Pan American Baseball Championship.

The sanction was notified to the athletes this Tuesday during a meeting at the Avilanian stadium José Ramón Cepero.

Fadraga and Ávalos were captured by the Public Security Secretariat of Aguas Calientes, at the request of the Cuban regime, after they left the Ramada hotel, where the delegation was staying.

The Cuban Baseball Federation (FCB) subsequently reported on his return to the island without finishing the tournament and described his decision as a lack “of the commitment made with the delegation and the homeland.”
