A group of citizens urges political leaders on Twitter to find “the ways” to appear together in the next elections
A group of citizens linked to the National Party (PN) and the Colorado Party (PC) launched an initiative in recent days with the aim of promoting a Republican coalition that competes with a common motto in the departmental elections of May 2025.
In a statement released on a Twitter account created a few days ago, the movement points out that the initiative comes from citizens who in the last elections voted for one of the parties that make up the current government coalition: PN, PC, Partido Independiente, Cabildo Open and People’s Party.
“We wish to make a call to political leaders through this means to seek the necessary paths in order to appear in the next elections under a common motto. This exhortation is based on the conviction that the Uruguayan political system, due to the rule of the constitutional reform of 1996, has turned towards a new ‘bipartisanship’, which therefore requires that the electoral offer adjust to the new reality”, points out the release.
The signatories point out that the expression “is not a call to abdicate the traditions and sentiments of those who adhere to the founding parties, nor is it to promote their merger into a new party.”
Adapt to new electoral realities
“On the contrary, it seeks to create an instrument that allows the old traditions and the democratic and republican sentiments they share to adapt to the new electoral realities. It is a fact that one of the poles of the new ‘bipartisanship’ clearly acts under new rules, while the other pole continues to act in accordance with the rules that the 1996 reform made obsolete,” the document added.
And he adds: “The common motto will allow the parties to act on an equal footing in the selection and election of the electoral formula that will represent them in the national election. The current format gives a clear advantage to the largest party, which ends up conspiring against the chance of the entire coalition, by operating as an obstacle for those who do not identify with that group. This is clearly demonstrated by the comparison between national elections and ballots in recent years.
The document was signed by actors such as Washington Corallo (former president of the Chamber of Industry), Pablo Montaldo (President of the Uruguayan Chamber of Financial Services Companies), Graziano Pascale, Guillermo Sicardi, Carlos Tarabochia, Oscar N. Ventura, among others. .
For his part, the president of the National Audiovisual Communication Service (Secan), Gerardo Sotelo, wrote on his Twitter account: “Citizen commitment and initiative to strengthen republican values and the political space of the majority. Congratulations. Above!”.
meeting between parties
The former president and general secretary of the Colorado Party, Julio María Sanguinetti, went to the headquarters of the National Party to hold a meeting with Pablo Iturralde, president of that political group.
At the meeting, the Colorado leaders presented to the nationalists their intention to appear in the 2025 departmental elections with a common motto.
Currently, of the 19 departments that the country has, the National Party governs in 15, the Broad Front in three and the Colorado Party only in Rivera.
The PC proposal is being analyzed by nationalist leaders and the different sectors of the PN.
