The promoter of the Formula 1 World Championship announced this Thursday having definitively broken his contract with the promoter of the Russian Grand Prix, after the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army.
“Formula 1 can confirm that it has completed its contract with the promoter of the Russian Grand Prix, which means that Russia will not have a race in the future“F1 promoter Formula One told reporters.
The 2022 Russian GP, canceled last week following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it was to be the last organized in Sochi before being transferred from 2023 to Saint Petersburg.
The decision announced Thursday is yet another in a series of measures taken by different international institutions against Russian sport, following Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine.
On Monday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) urged the exclusion of Russians and Belarusians of all sports competitions, thus breaking with a long tradition of non-intervention in political or geopolitical debates.
For its part, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) has decided to authorize Russian and Belarusian pilots to participate under a neutral flag in competitions regulated by this institution, including Formula 1.
However, “no international competition will take place in Russia or Belarus until further notice” and “no flag, symbol or anthem of Russia and Belarus will be used in international competitions until further notice,” the FIA said this week.
The future of Russian driver Nikita Mazepin in Formula 1 is uncertain, and it is linked to the sponsorship between the American team Haas and its main Russian sponsor, the Uralkali group, specialized in the production of potash.
Mazepin arrived last year at Formula 1 and he is the son of the Russian millionaire and oligarch Dmitry Mazepin, a shareholder of Uralkali, who landed in the Haas team the same year as the team’s main sponsor.
The British Federation (Motorsport UK) went further on Wednesday, banning Russian or Belarusian pilots from competing in the UK.
