Former Trump White House counselor Kellyanne Conway met Monday with investigators from the House committee investigating the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.
Conway was not publicly quoted by the committee, but as she left the room, during a break, she said: “I am here voluntarily.” She was not part of the Trump administration on January 6, but, according to The Washington Postcalled an aide to the former president and urged him to withdraw his supporters who were storming the Capitol, noting that he had received a call from the DC mayor’s office seeking help in obtaining the presence of the National Guard.
One of Trump’s staunchest supporters, Conway wrote that he lost his 2020 re-election bid in his memoir. “Despite the mountains of money Trump had raised, his team just couldn’t get the job done. A job that was doable and had a clear path if followed,” she wrote in the book. “Instead of accepting responsibility for the loss, they played along and provided full encouragement (in private, not on TV) when Trump kept insisting that he won.”
The House Jan. 6 Committee is in the final weeks of its investigation, as it will be forced to disband by the time Congress’s term expires at the end of the year.
Before that date, it will issue a final report detailing its findings.
