Santo Domingo.- The former president of the Government of Spain, Felipe González Márquez, said Thursday that under no circumstances can the Dominican Republic be attributed the responsibility of fixing the problems that Haiti is currently experiencing.
He added that this problem requires the intervention of the international community and added that what Haiti is going through is a drama, the result of a failed state.
“I think that the Haitian drama, the failed State, of unlimited violence, demands the attention of what we call, for what it’s worth, the international community,” he stressed.
These statements were offered by the former president during his participation in the panel “Progress and Leadership: Public and Private Collaboration for the Challenges of the XXI Century”, organized by unibe and the Felipe Gonzalez Foundation.
Referring once again to the Haitian situation, the president said that the international community has not been sufficiently responsible and that security and respect for human rights in that nation worsens every day.
He reiterated that the Dominican Republic has been the most affected country and, at the same time, the most supportive of the neighboring nation, while acknowledging the help offered by other Latin American countries for a humanitarian intervention.
He mentioned that King Felipe VI of Spain also recognized that the collaboration of the international community is needed to rebuild Haiti.
Public-private collaboration
During the panel, when talking about public-private collaboration, President Luis Abinader reiterated that his government promotes private investment and that the growth registered in recent years is due to this, “if we are a pro-business government, we are a pro-employment government”.
He assured that when there is unity between the private sector and the Government, there is economic development.
The distinguished exponents talked about the meaning of leading projects of progress and democratic governance in the 21st century, as well as the importance of public-private collaboration and the participation of all actors to face the challenges of today. They also discussed the role of Latin America in this regard and the role that the Dominican Republic can play in the region to promote this synergy.
The activity is part of the conference cycle: “The challenges of governance in the 21st century, Unibe – Felipe González Foundation”, which have been carried out within the framework of the agreement signed between both institutions, as a way of identifying solutions and giving response to the challenges facing democracy.
