Former presidents of the DC ask for an “integrating national leadership” and to renew the “expired structures” of the party

Nine former presidents of the Christian Democracy (DC) called in an open letter for the creation of an integrated and inclusive national leadership. This, after the comfortable triumph of the Rejection in the plebiscite of September 4.

In the letter -signed by Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, Ignatius Walker, Fuad Chahinamong other former presidents of the DC- called for the “creation of an integrated and inclusive national leadership, capable of opening the way for new generations and promoting the renewal of leadership at all levels, promoting a reasoned and frank debate on the mechanism and the way in which the New Constitution will be drawn up”.

That, to overcome “the serious errors made in the creation of norms that allowed the election of a Convention without a vision of the Common Good and with a mistaken conception of the Chile that we are and that we want to build.”

“A central task of this new party leadership will be to define a clear schedule for the renewal of the expired structures of our community, including the National Board, the National Council, and the Supreme Court,” they added.

If that unitary meeting takes place, we can advance in the CD proposal for the 21st century, a task that corresponds to our next Party Congress to decide. By strengthening the political instances with adequate technical support, we can prepare proposals for the New Constitution,” they added.

Criticism of the proposal of the CC

The signatories also issued criticism against the proposal for the new Constitution put forward by the Constitutional Convention. “Those who believed that there was a conflict between the democratic State and the native peoples were defeated, as shown by the percentages of participation and voting in the most representative communes of the country.”

“The most responsible political forces of government and opposition made explicit their commitment to introduce changes in a proposal that disregarded the national soul and extreme positions,” they continued.

“Beyond the legitimate disagreements we had in the DC, we have all supported the need to draw up a New Constitution,” they added.

They expressed that this Magna Carta must recognize “the condition of a Social and Democratic State of Law, which is proud to be a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural Homeland, strengthens the role of women through parity, ensures proper care of nature, biodiversity and ecosystems, and recognize in young people the yearning for a fairer future”.
