Former presidents criticize the "silence" of the region in the face of repressive actions by the Ortega dictatorship

A group of 22 former presidents of Latin America, members of the Democratic Initiative of Spain and the Americas (IDEA), lamented the “silence” of the region in the face of violations of the human rights of Nicaraguans exercised by the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo . IDEA excludes from this statement the governments of Gabriel Boric and Guillermo Lasso, from Chile and Ecuador respectively, who have ruled on the situation in the country.

The organization points out that the Nicaraguan regime has carried out a “dictatorial onslaught” by banishing 222 political prisoners who have had their Nicaraguan nationality withdrawn and ordered the confiscation of their assets.

They also point to the stripping of citizenship of 94 personalities from the Central American country and the sentence of 26 years in prison against the bishop of the Diocese of Matagalpa, Monsignor Rolando José Álvarez Lagos.

“The members of the IDEA Group are concerned that the president of the United Mexican States, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, leaving aside his repeated principle of Non-Intervention, accuses the democratic and provisional government of Peru of being spurious in order to avoid transferring the Pro Tempore presidency to him. of the Pacific Alliance, while remaining silent in the face of the exercise and violations of human rights perpetrated by the Ortega-Murillo couple, in Nicaragua,” reads the official IDEA statement.

The latest actions of the Nicaraguan dictatorship have been the banishment of 222 political prisoners, including five disgraced Sandinistas, and then it withdrew the nationality of 94 Nicaraguans and the confiscation of their property. Most of the new stateless persons are in exile. .

Nicaragua has been experiencing a social, political, economic and human rights crisis since April 2018 when it began a civic revolt that the regime ordered to suppress. This decision left 355 people dead, according to updated data from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), all crimes remain unpunished.
