The former presidents asked the Supreme Pontiff to mediate in the Venezuelan political crisis to achieve recognition of the electoral results and a path to transition

At least 30 former presidents, who are part of the Democratic Initiative of Spain and the Americas (IDEA), sent and published a letter to Pope Francis to ask for his intercession in Venezuela and for the current Government to accept the results of the presidential election on December 28. July, as well as to begin a peaceful transition process.
The former heads of state sent their letter almost two months ago, exactly on August 4, although they did not receive a response from the Holy See, these leaders explained to the Pope in a “clear and forceful” way the victory of Edmundo González Urrutia, who He is currently under exile in Spain.
Additionally, these former presidents denounced in October at a forum in Miami, United States, that in Venezuela there was electoral fraud by the Venezuelan authorities that declared Nicolás Maduro as the winner.

The former presidents took advantage of the occasion to denounce that Maduro went to the Supreme Court of Justice to arbitrate in his favor, reported the EFE news agency.
“In short, we request your pastoral and prophetic action by asking the Government of Venezuela to accept the true and evident electoral result and begin a negotiation for a transition without violence and in peace,” concluded the letter they sent to Pope Francis.
The letter was released this Friday, November 1. Among the signatories are former presidents Mario Abdo (Paraguay), Óscar Arias (Costa Rica), José María Aznar (Spain), Nicolás Ardito Barletta (Panama), Felipe Calderón (Mexico), Rafael Ángel Calderón, José María Figueres, Laura Chinchilla ( Costa Rica), Alfredo Cristiani (El Salvador), Iván Duque (Colombia), Vicente Fox (Mexico) and Federico Franco (Paraguay), Hipólito Mejía (Dominican Republic) and Luis Guillermo Solís (Costa Rica).
Also signing the declaration were Eduardo Frei (Chile), Luis Alberto Lacalle (Uruguay), Guillermo Lasso and Osvaldo Hurtado, (Ecuador), Mauricio Macri (Argentina), Jamil Mahuad (Ecuador), Carlos Mesa (Bolivia), Lenin Moreno (Ecuador) , Mireya Moscoso (Panama), Andrés Pastrana (Colombia), Ernesto Pérez Balladares (Panama), Jorge Tuto Quiroga (Bolivia), Mariano Rajoy (Spain), Miguel Ángel Rodríguez (Costa Rica), Álvaro Uribe (Colombia) and Juan Carlos Wasmosy (Paraguay).
