Former President of Uruguay: “Venezuela’s election is a cause for great concern”

Former Uruguayan President Julio María Sanguinetti hopes that “Venezuela can return to a democratic, clean and peaceful path”


Former Uruguayan President Julio María Sanguinetti said that the Venezuelan election “raises the greatest concern” and indicated that he hopes that the country can return to a clean and peaceful democratic path.

Sanguinetti said to EFE There are concerns that the elections will be held “in the midst of a climate of harassment, threats, and constant repression of the opposition candidate.”

He also indicated that the candidate of the Unitary Platform, Edmundo Gonzalezis constantly subjected to intimidating acts.

“We hope that a peaceful vote will be held,” said Julio María Sanguinetti, who stressed that the threat of a “bloodbath” made by President Nicolás Maduro “is truly irresponsible.”

Sanguinetti hopes that “Venezuela can return to a democratic, clean and peaceful path,” said the former president.

The presidential elections will be held in the country on Sunday, July 28. To date, other leaders in the region have called on Nicolás Maduro to recognize the results of these elections, such as the Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who said he was scared by Maduro’s statements about “a bloodbath” in the nation if he loses the elections.

The Brazilian president asked Nicolás Maduro that “if he wants to contribute to solving the problem of Venezuela’s growth and the return of those who left, he has to respect the democratic process.”
