Former Itaipu workers are left without compensation

This Thursday, the Executive’s veto of the project that compensates the alleged workers of the contractor company that built Itaipu with 940 million dollars could not be dealt with in the Senate.

Its about decree 7940, by which the bill is totally objected to which establishes the payment of historical compensation to former workers, builders of the plant, assembly and commissioning of Itaipu’s generating units, directly hired by contractor companies and works subcontractors, lessors and sub-lessors of services and health agreements and right bank education.

It is worth mentioning that in its rejection, at the request of Itaipu’s own board of directors, the Executive argued that both the payment mechanisms and the amounts claimed are unfeasible and do not correspond, since the former workers belonged to Itaipu contractor companies, that is, they had no direct employment relationship with the entity
The 940 million that they intend to distribute among 15,000 people, would force the suspension of transfers to the Paraguayan State, social investments and other items.

The list of beneficiaries raised doubts from the beginning, due to the appearance of names such as Vice President Hugo Velázquez, who, after being discovered, said he did not understand how he was included and finally requested to be excluded.

The Executive’s veto will have automatic sanction this Sunday, December 4, date on which the term of 60 calendar days for the Legislative is issued. Failing to do so, it will be understood that he agreed to what was resolved by the Presidency.
