The former governor of Minas Gerais Newton Cardoso, 86, died at dawn on Sunday (2) in Belo Horizonte. Cardoso was hospitalized in a hospital in the capital. The cause of death was not informed.
The death of the politician was communicated by his son, Federal Deputy Newton Cardoso Jr. (MDB-MG), in a publication on social networks.
“With deep sadness and immense pain in the heart, communicated the death of my dear father, Newton Cardoso, who left us at dawn on February 2, at the age of 86,” wrote the deputy.
Born in Brumado, Bahia, “Newão”, as he was known, ruled the state between 1987 and 1991. He was also mayor of Contagem, in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, for three terms, as well as federal deputy.
The former governor was one of the founders of the MDB in 1966, a party to which he was affiliated throughout his political career.
In a statement, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva regretted the death of Newton Cardoso and released note: “I received with regret the news of the death of Newton Cardoso, at the age of 86.
