Retired PNP Colonel Walter Olórtiga Gonzáles, former member of the Special Intelligence Group (GEIN), died yesterday due to cardiac arrest.
Olórtiga was one of the agents recognized as a Hero of Democracy for combating terrorism in the 90s. This distinction was made by law No. 30655, approved in the Congress of the Republic in 2017 and promulgated by the then president of the Republic, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.

According José Luis Gil, former member of the GEINthe deceased entered officer school in 1983. “He was one of the first in his promotion. He has been a very correct officer. His integrity stood out; he was an upright and incorruptible person, which is why his nickname was ‘The Hard One’.”, he told Perú 21.
In the team, he served in a surveillance and monitoring position. The retired colonel participated in 17 operations carried out by the GEIN to liquidate Sendero Luminoso.
“He is a hero of democracy named by Congress and, as such, he must be honored tomorrow at his funeral, in the National Police cemetery.”Gil recalled.

The Special Intelligence Group (GEIN) of the Directorate Against Terrorism (Dircote) of the National Police of Peru was responsible for the capture of the leadership of the terrorist organization Sendero Luminoso.
This unit is historically remembered for having executed, on September 12, 1992, the Operation Victory which allowed the capture of the terrorist leader Abimael Guzmán Reinoso, who had been perpetrating his self-proclaimed people’s war in Peru since May 17, 1980 and who was arrested along with his central committee.
