Former foreign ministers say that the TSJ’s support for Maduro’s reelection “is not valid”

TSJ

These former Latin American diplomats reject the TSJ ruling and asked the Venezuelan authorities to “respect the popular sovereignty expressed at the polls” and to publish the disaggregated voting records so that they can be “subjected to independent verification with international presence.”

A dozen former Latin American foreign ministers said on Monday, August 26, that the decision of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) to support the controversial reelection of Nicolás Maduro, whose victory in the July 28 presidential elections is accused of being fraudulent by the majority opposition, “is not valid.”

Through a release Together, these 12 foreign ministers, including Colombia’s María Ángela Hoguín, Mexico’s Jorge Castañeda and Chile’s José Miguel Insulza, stated that the TSJ “lacks impartiality and independence,” a situation that has been denounced by other international organizations such as the United Nations and the Carter Center.

They also indicated that the Supreme Court works in conjunction with the National Electoral Council (CNE) and has “played a role within the State’s repressive machinery”; therefore, they insist that the decision to endorse the results favorable to Maduro “is not valid, in addition to being unconstitutional.”

These former Latin American diplomats asked the Venezuelan authorities to “respect the popular sovereignty expressed at the polls” and to publish the disaggregated voting records so that they can be “subjected to independent verification with an international presence.”

This Monday, the CNE announced that it will abide by the decision of the Supreme Court of Justice, that it will publish the results and also requested the highest authority to publish the results already announced in the Official Gazette.

The TSJ said it had received, from the CNE, all the records confirming Maduro’s victory and decided to keep this material “in safekeeping,” despite the fact that regulations and tradition indicate that the results of the election from each voting center must be published.
